Penang hotel and lodging guide

Oriental Hotel in George Town, Penang.
Penang has arguably the best choice of accommodation in Malaysia ranging from converted colonial mansions to multinational beach resorts with all modern facilities. Many visitors to Penang head straight to the seaside town of Batu Ferringhi and only head into Georgetown for day trips and brief excursions. Although there is nothing wrong with is approach, there is undeniably enough interesting attractions, restaurants and nightlife in the wonderful state capital to warrant lengthier stays.
All the large international chains such as Shangri-La, Hilton and Sheraton have offerings here which include swanky spas and five star dining. Competition keeps prices relatively low and some fantastic deals are available through out online booking partners, especially in off-season.
Budget travellers are also well catered for with a range of backpacker hostels and simple guesthouses both by the beach and in the city centre.
54 Love Lane Inn is a popular Georgetown guesthouse with dorm beds available from only US$5. Wan Hai, in Lrg Cinta, has a relaxing roof garden and some of the cheapest double rooms in the city. Star Lodge, in Muntri Street, is a great choice for its free internet and exceptionally friendly staff whilst Blue Diamond, in Lebuh Chulia, has simple rooms around a pretty courtyard.
Budget options in Batu Ferringhi are rather more limited with Baba Guesthouse a family-run operation by the western end of the seafront. Nearby Ali’s and the aptly-named Budget Guest House also offer simple rooms starting at around US$10 and represent great value for money.
