Malaysia shopping guide
Shopping is not just a pastime in Malaysia but has developed into a way of life ingrained on the national psyche as much as Catholicism in Italy. The country is awash with flashy shopping malls which contain rollercoasters, cinemas, ice rinks as well as the usual array of restaurants bars and, of course, shops. Other than just an attractive retreat from the steamy heat of the tropical climate, Malaysian shopping malls contain every possible designer brand and high street name.
Shopping in Malaysia even has its own special festivals attached such as the Malaysia Mega Sale which encourages shoppers to get out and spend more with attractive discounts and savings. Fashion is a popular choice in Malaysia with local designers such as Jimmy Choo sharing space with the best European fashion houses of Gucci, Prada, Chanel and Versace. Malaysia shopping - bargain hunting in malls, markets and resorts
As with most of the populace of Asia, Malaysians are addicted to their electronic gadgets with the latest mobile phones flying out of stock as quickly as Nokia and Samsung can develop them.
Plasma TVs and MP3 players quickly become must-have items and so visitors to Kuala Lumpur or Penang will find new models often at discounted prices. One of the beauties of shopping here, is that foreigners can arrange to collect their purchases at the airport and so save a bundle on tax and duty, not to mention the hassle of lugging stuff around.
Malaysia also comes with a bunch of duty-free zones, with the the large resort island of Pulau Langkawi, up in the northwest of Peninsula Malaysia (close to the Thai border), being the foremost duty-free haven in the country.
These areas are great places to pick up cut-price alcohol and cigarettes, along with souvenirs such as handicrafts and jewellery. Borneo pearls are extremely sought-after and make fantastic gifts, while traditional batik clothing is easy and light to pack away and lasts forever.
