Transportation in Malaysia

Transportation in Malaysia is generally of a higher standard compared with most Southeast Asian nations, with sealed roads and luxury coaches making travel extremely comfortable. Malaysia transport tips - getting here and around the region

It is not much more to fly from one end of Malaysia to the other if you book early with AirAsia, with prices being somewhere within the region of bus or train travel. AirAsia is a Malay firm and serves all airports in the country and throughout the region.

If you want to get about more leisurely and make stop-offs frequently, then bus travel is hard to beat. Services go all over the country and come in from neighbouring Thailand and Singapore to boot. There are also train stations in most areas of the country, with the main line going between Bangkok, Thailand in the north to Singapore in the south.

You can also get to Malaysia by ferry. Services arrive at Penang and KL from Sumatra and travellers with time on their hands can use these routes to hop from one Indonesian island to another. Ferries also run from Johor Bahru to Singapore.

Renting a car is a viable option and works out as good value, especially if you are travelling as a family with young children, or perhaps as a group with friends. Motorcycle rental is popular in beach resorts, such as on Langkawi and Penang, and is an inexpensive method of getting about.
